Evil Eye

For the first bar we decided to go out of our comfort zone. The Evil Eye is a well-known bar in York, specifically known for its bizarre, weird but wonderful interior. Not only is it a bar but also a shop during the day where you can purchase the alcohol found in the drinks.

We arrived at 9pm and had no trouble getting in, the bar wasn’t packed but still upheld its lively atmosphere. Straight away we decided to look at the menu which was framed on the wall behind the bar. Although this seemed like a unique touch at first instance, it became a bit troublesome when more people began to gather around the menu. We didn’t realise that the bar was so big until we decided to explore the upstairs. In total there are three floors all with different interiors and seating arrangements. The downstairs, where the bar was found, was decorated with bright colours on the walls and bar. Whereas, the upstairs was more relaxed with bed like seating. Covered in cushions and blankets giving off a more intimate touch. Finally, the top floor had several rooms with benches and sofas, perfect for bigger groups. The music which was played was predominately indie rock creating a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere.

We got served very quickly and the bartender was polite and helpful with our questions and queries. We decided to get the Angel Cooler as our mocktail. This was a berry-based drink,

very fresh and vibrant. The price of the mocktail was extremely reasonable, it was only £3.50, and we would recommend getting it both as a mocktail or even with a spirit in it. Then we went to order the classic drink being the porn star martini. However, this is the one drink that the bar doesn’t serve. Instead we asked for another classic and we received a margarita, this was priced at £6.50 which is reasonable for the type of spirit as well as the size of the drink. The last drink was selected by the bartender, it was the Evil Eye’s specialty called the Smokey Bandit, costing us £7. We completely let the bartender choose the drink, he did ask about preferences, yet we gave him a free hand and he produced a tropical drink with a hint of spice, which added a kick to the drink. After a few sips we decided that the spice overpowered the tropical fruit flavours. The mocktail was Ada’s favourite because it was sweet, fruity and had fresh fruit in the bottom which gave it a little extra. My favourite was the margarita because it was refreshing and had all the right elements for the drink.

The barman also informed us that they do deals throughout the week. These were 5pm-9pm Sunday to Thursday 2 cocktails for £10 and 4 £3 shots for £10. These are great deals and should be advertised more.

Overall, we thought that the atmosphere and the price of the drinks was great, and we recommend the bar but don’t get the Smokey Bandit if you can’t handle your spice!
